Call (888) 555 0142What counts as a home emergency
A home emergency is anything that puts people at risk or causes damage that gets worse by the hour. Common examples include:
- Water coming in from a burst pipe, a failed water heater or a storm
- Damage after a fire, including smoke, soot and water from firefighting
- Sewage backing up through toilets, showers or floor drains
- A roof opened up by wind, hail or a fallen tree
- A tree down on the house, a car or a power line
Safety first
If you smell gas, see sparking wires or smoke, or a tree is touching a power line, leave the area and call 911 or your utility company first.
Water
Shut off the main water valve if you can reach it safely. Stay out of standing water near outlets or the fuse box.
Fire
Wait until the fire department says the home is safe. Do not switch on power or the heating and cooling system.
Sewage
Stop using sinks, toilets and showers. Keep children and pets away from the affected area.
Storm and trees
Stay clear of damaged roofs, fallen branches and any downed power lines.
While you wait for help
- Take photos and video of the damage before anything is moved
- Call your insurance company early and note the claim number
- Move valuables and important papers away from the damage if it is safe
- Keep receipts for anything you spend, such as a hotel stay
