How Sifixit works

Sifixit is a free referral service for homeowners in the United States. We do not repair, clean or restore anything ourselves. Instead, we give you one number to call for the service you need, and that call connects you with an independent local provider.

This page explains exactly what happens when you call, who you will speak to, how Sifixit is paid and what to check before you hire anyone.

How it works in three steps

  1. Pick your service and call. Every service page shows its own number. Calling is free and you do not need to fill in any forms.
  2. Get connected. Your call may be answered by a call specialist who asks a few quick questions, or it may go straight to a local provider.
  3. Talk and decide. Discuss the job, the price and the timing with the provider. You choose whether to hire them, and you pay them directly.

Who answers your call

Depending on the service and your area, your call is handled in one of two ways.

A call specialist

A trained call specialist working with our marketing partner asks what happened, where you are and how soon you need help, then connects you with a provider who handles that kind of job.

A local provider directly

For some services and areas, your call goes straight through to an independent local business that handles the work you described.

Either way, the provider you end up speaking to is an independent business. They are not Sifixit employees, and Sifixit does not supervise their work.

What Sifixit does and does not do

What Sifixit does

  • Gives you one free number for each type of home service
  • Connects your call with a provider for that service where one serves your area
  • Publishes plain English guides to help you understand the job
  • Shares checks and questions to use before you hire

What Sifixit does not do

  • Perform, supervise or guarantee any work
  • Employ, license, vet or endorse providers
  • Set or collect prices for any job
  • Handle payments, contracts or warranties
  • Offer reviews or ratings of providers

How Sifixit is paid

Using Sifixit is free for you. Sifixit may be paid a fee by a marketing partner when calls are connected to providers. This does not change what you pay the provider, and you are never obliged to hire anyone you speak to.

Your details and your call

The Sifixit website does not ask for your name, address or payment details. When you call, you share information such as your ZIP code and a description of the job directly with the call specialist or provider. Calls may be monitored or recorded by the partner or the provider. Our privacy policy explains more.

Before you hire anyone

Because providers are independent, it is worth a few minutes to check them yourself.

  • Ask for the state license number and look it up on your state licensing board website.
  • Ask to see proof of insurance rather than taking a yes on the phone.
  • Get a written quote that lists the work, the materials and what is not included.
  • Keep any deposit small and pay the final balance only when the job is finished.
  • Get any warranty in writing, and check recent reviews on independent websites.

Does Sifixit check the providers?

No. Sifixit does not vet, license or endorse providers. Use the checks on this page before you hire anyone.

Do you serve my area?

What if I am not happy with the work?
